Tikkun Olam @GJC
At Germantown Jewish Centre we believe that Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) is central to our identity as a Jewish community. Our mission is to engage our diverse membership in Tikkun Olam both within the Jewish community and in the broader interfaith world of the Philadelphia region and beyond. Our service and advocacy work are guided by the principle of Seeking Justice by working towards the ideals of fairness, opportunity and anti-oppression for all. Through learning, serving others and advocating for systemic change, Tikkun Olam @ GJC offers members a variety of ways to get involved that reflects our interests and skills, and accommodates the demands of work and family commitments. Our aspiration is to infuse the entire synagogue with greater awareness of how we can fulfill the Jewish imperative towards “Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue.”
Germantown Jewish Centre provides a number of opportunities to engage in Tikkun Olam. They include helping the homeless, supporting refugees, working with local public schools, and advocating for racial justice. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Chair Allyson Y. Schwartz. Allyson brings a wealth of experience and commitment to social justice to our community after a long career leading non-profits in the private sector and 25 years in public service having served in the U.S. Congress and the Pennsylvania State Senate representing parts of parts of Montgomery County and Philadelphia. She and her husband David are long-time members of GJC. As Chair, she welcomes your participation in Tikkun Olam initiatives as we, as individuals and as a community, to do our part to make the world around us more just, secure, and welcoming.
