Learning to love God

--

In our Shalvah program of weekly study, meditation, and chanting, Nina and I looked this week at Deuteronomy 6:5, a verse familiar to us as the second line of the Sh’ma that commands us to love God.  What does it mean to love God?  Maimonides teaches us that we were actually built for this kind of love.  All of our capacities–our intellect, our emotions, and our bodies–were designed to enable us to figure out what God wants from us and to enact that in our lives, primarily through our engagement with other people.  During this difficult time, feeling that kind of love flowing through us can help us cope, survive, and even thrive amid the challenges we face every day.
