Freedom for all

--

There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who resides in your midst.” (Exodus 12:49)
This verse, which comes near the end of the Torah reading for the first day of Pesah, reminds us that our freedom is bound up with the freedom of every human being.  Just as it makes no sense to talk about peace for ourselves without talking about peace for everyone, so too does it make no sense to talk about freedom for ourselves without talking about freedom for others.  As Emma Lazarus reminded us, “Until we are all free, none of us is free.”  May our focus on freedom at the Passover Seders–and on the story of how we were transformed from slaves to free people–inspire us to redouble our efforts to bring freedom not only to ourselves but to all who dwell on earth.
