Comforting each other

--

The images of comfort with which we are most familiar tend to focus on co-presence: hands held, hugs given, tears dried.  How do we provide each other with comfort when we cannot be in the same physical space?  We still have some of the most powerful tools at our disposal:  our words and our silent presence, even on the phone, on FaceTime, or on Zoom.  We shouldn’t discount the power of emails, texts, or even Facebook comments to provide comfort to those we care about when we can’t be physically in their presence.  Everything counts, each contact is meaningful, and each of us can do so much.  Let’s not shy away from doing what we can do, knowing that it will provide comfort not only to others but also to ourselves.
