Chanting the names of God

--

How can we connect with different aspects of the divine?  One traditional Jewish method is to chant names of God that represent those aspects as a way of internalizing our understanding and experience of the divine.  In our Shalvah program this week we discussed, meditated on, and chanted two Hebrew names of God that are often interpreted as representing two extremes:  the divine power of the world as it is and the equal divine power of the world as it could be.  In our current, fraught moment, there is a deep need for us to retain our equanimity in the face of difficult realities that we cannot change, while at the same time we never lose our vision of the possibilities for transformation even in hard times.  May our meditation and chanting help us apprehend this paradox and let it support us through this Shabbat and beyond.
