Traveling with the Rishonim: Medieval Luminaries in Spain and France
CLASS SESSIONS:
Sundays, January 29, February 5, and February 19 from 7:00-08:30 PM on Zoom
In September, Laynie & Zahara went on a self-guided “Rishonim Tour,” a pilgrimage to the places and spaces in Spain and France where medieval Talmud commentators lived and learned. Who were these luminary figures and what can their lives teach us about sustaining community under the weight of imperialism? Join us for an opportunity to meet our medieval ancestors, through which we’ll explore how we can cultivate a relationship with people and places in our histories that are lost.
TUITION: $30/member, $45/non-member
Zahara Zahav
Zahara Zahav (she/her) is the Director of Organizing at Jews for Racial & Economic Justice working with the Caring Majority, a movement of older adults, people with disabilities, family caregivers, and home care workers, to win fair pay for home care workers in New York State. She loves science-fiction, learning Torah and learning anything, her hometown of Key West, and seltzer.
Laynie Soloman
Laynie Soloman (they/them) is a teacher and Torah-lover who seeks to uplift the piously irreverent, queer, and subversive spirit of rabbinic text and theology. They serve as the Associate Rosh Yeshiva at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva, where they co-founded the Trans Halakha Project. Laynie is a third generation Ashkenazi Philadelphian, and when they’re not learning Talmud, you can find Laynie reading about liberation theology, laying in their hammock, and singing nigunim.
