Erev Tish’ah b’Av
The Arc of the Covenant: From Rupture to Redemption
with Visiting Rabbi Reba Carmel
Wednesday, July 26 at 8:00 PM, in-person in the Charry Sanctuary
(accessible via livestream here)
Ma’ariv Service, reading of Eicha (Lamentations), & Kinot to follow.
The destruction, displacement and psychic upheaval embedded in the public rituals and liturgy of 9 Av mark a seemingly irreparable and irreconcilable breach in our covenantal relationship with God and with one another. Before entering this time of mourning and collective introspection I want to interrogate the question of faith in the presence of tragedy, randomness and uncertainty. Finally, I want to consider human accountability and responsibility in the covenantal rupture and the potential for redemption.
Rabbi Reba Carmel is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and holds a Masters Degree in Bible from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Before moving to Israel, where she lived for ten years, Rabbi Carmel practiced law. She holds a certificate in Conflict Resolution from the Interfaith Center of Philadelphia where she was a member of the leadership cohort of Visionary Women of Faith for three years.
