The holiday of Shavuot connects us to each other and to our ancestors as we commemorate and relive revelation of Torah. This year, GJC is gathering together with P’nai Or and Mishkan Shalom for our annual Tikkun Leyl Shavuot (traditionally an all-night Torah study). Keep reading below for all the details!

  • 9:00-10:45 PM: Mahloket Matters: Constructive Dialogue for the Sake of Heaven with R. Malkah Binah Klein, a 2023 Mahloket Matters Fellow
    • Location: Magil Chapel

    • Description: Can we find the courage to productively engage with those with whom we disagree? In this interactive session using a curriculum from the Pardes Institute, we will study procedures from the ancient Sanhedrin (rabbinic court) to explore the art of constructive disagreement, followed by a mock-Sanhedrin with a case study set in our era. Please note, this session will run through 10:45 PM with a break.
  • 9:00-9:45 PM: A Reconstructionist Civil Rights Pilgrimage with members of Dorshei Derekh and Mishkan Shalom, including Mark Pinsky, Naomi Klayman, Adina Abramowitz, Rabbi Tamara Cohen, and Rabbi Shawn Zevit

    • Description: Several members of Minyan Dorshei Derekh and Mishkan Shalom joined 200 Reconstructionist Jews on this pilgrimage to Alabama and Georgia in March 2023.
      In this panel we will talk about the trip’s long-lasting impacts on us and what it meant to do it with a diverse group of Reconstructionist Jews.
  • 10:00-10:45 PM: Torah of Revelation – From the Big Bang of Genesis to Sinai and Beyond: Jewish texts and Spiritual Practice with R. Shawn Zevit

  • 10:00-10:45 PM: Singing Our Way through Torah – Mah Tovu Ohalecha Ya’akov (How lovely are your tents, Jacob!) with Tobie Hoffman
    • Location: Maple Tent
    • Please note, this study session will not be livestreamed.
    • Description: The words of Torah inspire music makers to bring our sacred history to life with melodies that are woven into our liturgy and gatherings. There will be a small Torah to scroll through, song sheets, and opportunities to share other melodies.
  • 11:00-11:45 PM: Connecting Revelation and Tradition – Insights from Franz Rosenzweig with R. David Teutsch
    • Location: Maslow Auditorium

    • Description: How we connect revelation to our own Jewish practice has remained a question for all of Jewish history. Rosenzweig’s answers prove empowering for many Jews.

    • Description: Chanting of the prophet Ezekiel’s chariot vision.
  • 12:30-1:15 AM: Water, Torah and Transformation with Student Rabbis Alana Krivo Kaufman and Maria Pulzetti
    • Location: Maple Tent
    • Description: We’ll study Biblical and rabbinic texts about water as a metaphor for Torah, including the role of immersion before revelation at Sinai.
  • 1:30-2:15 AM: Can Torah Be Taught? Can Torah Be Learned? with R. Adam Zeff

  • 2:30-3:15 AM: How Much for a Bowl of Stew? The Rabbis on Prescription Drug Pricing with Mati Zeff

    • Description: Exploring the contemporary crisis of drug pricing in the US through the lens of rabbinic thought.
  • 3:30-4:30 AM: Reading the Book of Ruth
