We do not passively read texts but actively meet them with our whole selves: our bodies, our emotions, our intellects and our unique perspectives. In this class we read selected rabbinic texts guided by feminist, queer, and anti-racist questions such as: Who is centered in the text? Who is marginalized? Who is absent? Who is vilified? Who matters—and who does not? And how are these binary questions challenged and subverted within texts? In addition to learning selected texts, we will endeavor to write new “talmudic” passages collectively. As with all of our Open Beit Midrash classes, all genders are welcome.
Gwynn Kessler earned her Ph.D. in Talmud and Rabbinics from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Gwynn is an Associate Professor of Religion and the Director of the Beit Midrash at Swarthmore College.

This class is offered as part of our Open Beit Midrash (Open House of Learning) series, which provides our community with a steady stream of learning opportunities that stir our hearts, ignite our minds, and inspire connections among one another. Our study is rooted in Jewish text and carried out through hevrutah (partnered) learning.
From November 10, 2020-May 11, 2021, we will gather every Tuesday night for learning. Each class in the series meets for three consecutive weeks and is facilitated by a different teacher. All texts are provided in the original language and in English translation, giving each hevrutah (learning pair) the ability to move at their own level and pace. All sessions will meet on Zoom until further notice.
