Shtisel: A Discussion in Two Parts
Event Navigation

HAZAK & Israel Programming at GJC present “Shtisel: A Discussion in Two Parts,” facilitated by Howard Spodek, Professor Emeritus of World History at Temple University and Shtisel devotee
Whether you liked it or not so much, “Shtisel” is worth talking about on many levels, and Howard is prepared to delve into all of them. During the program, we will be discussing viewers reactions to:
- the conception of a religious family coping with life in the modern world; how the family navigates in this present; the family dramas that ensue at least partly because of the tension between tradition and “modernity”
- how these people, their situations, and interpersonal dynamics resonate (or don’t) with our own lives, past and present
- how each person defines and finds him/herself, within the ever-present family constellation
- the cinematography itself, and how Jerusalem is represented; the quality of casting and acting as the show unfolds
The Zoom link will be posted the week before each program. Other ideas for topics are welcome; please send them directly to Howard at spodek@temple.edu.”
GJC extends thanks and gratitude to the Stern /Gafni Endowment for Israel Engagement for their generous
support, and to the Wolfe Family Foundation for their support in all GJC programming.
