The GJC Men’s Club and Israel Programming at GJC, in coordination with the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Jewish Agency for Israel’s Partnership Together (also known as P2G) are pleased to welcome internationally known musician David Peretz for a special program in celebration of Yom ha-Atzma’ut. Every nation has its own mythology and ethos that shapes its cultural soul. But what do you do when a nation is thousands of years old but its members and culture are spread all over the world? From the end of the 19th century and forward, the rejuvenated Jewish culture had an amazing “startup,” and the popular Hebrew song made its way to become a sonic sculpture for the nation, state, and society. This music workshop with David Peretz tells the Israeli story through its popular songs. From the national anthem to ‘Jerusalem of Gold,’ from folk to hip hop, disco to punk, alternative to oriental, Israeli songs are an intimate portrait of Israeli society. Listen to the songs and hear the nation’s inner conflicts, successes, failures, tragic moments, and blissful moments.

About David Peretz:  David Peretz is a Musician, Academic Lecturer, and a Journalist. His work and sound installation have been played and shown all over the world. The music he composed for the Negev Andarta was awarded and presented at the Louvre Museum. He is the author of the anthology of the Popular Israeli song, part of the Israeli School curriculum.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia supports many programs in Israel. One of its flagship programs is the Jewish Agency for Israel’s Partnership Together (also known as P2G). Through this program, our Jewish community has been connected for over 20 years to 2 communities in the Western Negev- the city of Netivot and the regional council of S’dot Negev. The program was created as a way to connect our communities while sharing experiences, supporting programs, agencies, and vulnerable populations as well as focusing on new ways for regional development, innovation, and enhancing Jewish peoplehood. As communities that are situated in very close proximity to the Gaza strip we also understand their unique situation, suffering for over 20 years from security threats, and still managing to flourish, grow and provide their local population with a quality life and meaning, and for our community- a kind of “home away from home.” Click here for an informational video.
