Tuesdays, December 1, 8, & 15
7:00-8:30 PM on Zoom
with Deb and Jeff Schein

Participants are invited to dialogue with Drs Deborah and Jeffrey Schein about parenting, spiritual development, learning, and raising Jewish children in the digital age. Jeff and Deb draw selections from their own volumes on spiritual development, Jewish values, and technology and, a remarkable volume by Dr. Daniel Siegal The Power of Showing Up. The eye is always on the children and how parents and educators can flow with both the developmental shifts of children and the challenges of creating GJGDC (good Jewish global digital citizens).

Deb has been an early childhood educator since 1972 and received a doctorate in early childhood education with a focus on spiritual development in 2012.  She currently teaches for Champlain College and continues to research the relationships between spiritual development, play and nature. Deb has authored several books and currently conducts professional development workshops and courses. Deb once taught at the Early Childhood Program at Germantown Jewish Center. Dr. Jeffrey Schein is a graduate of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and the Temple doctoral program in education.  He is currently the senior consultant for Jewish education for the Mordecai M Kaplan Center for Jewish Peoplehood, the author of Text Me: Ancient Jewish Wisdom Meets Contemporary Jewish Education and a dozen other volumes about Jewish teaching and learning. He and Deb were proud members of the Germantown Jewish Centre from 1983 to 1991.

This class is offered as part of our Open Beit Midrash (Open House of Learning) series, which provides our community with a steady stream of learning opportunities that stir our hearts, ignite our minds, and inspire connections among one another. Our study is rooted in Jewish text and carried out through hevrutah (partnered) learning.

From November 10, 2020-May 11, 2021, we will gather every Tuesday night for learning. Each class in the series meets for three consecutive weeks and is facilitated by a different teacher.  All texts are provided in the original language and in English translation, giving each hevrutah (learning pair) the ability to move at their own level and pace. All sessions will meet on Zoom until further notice.
