Abayudaya (Jews) of Uganda

02/23/2022 @ 02/23/2022 - 02/23/2022 EST

Event Navigation

You are invited to join the Women of Germantown Jewish Centre (Women of GJC) via Zoom to hear the complicated and compelling 100-year plus history of the Abayudaya (Jews) of Uganda. The second of WGJC’s Jews Around the World programs will be presented by Dr. Ellen Frankel, publisher and editor (former Editor-in-Chief and CEO of the Jewish Publication Society), author of 11 books, scholar, librettist, and much more.

Ellen will tell us about her first-hand experience providing meaningful and sustaining help to better the living conditions and Jewish resources of K’far Rishon Namutumba, the oldest of Uganda’s Abayudaya (Jewish) villages. This is a very personal story for GJC, which began in Summer 2019 when Kigondere Samuel Matiya (Bucky to us) showed up at GJC from his summer at Camp Ramah for promised books and resources to bring his Ugandan village. The rest… is history.

Long-term members of GJC, Frankel, and her husband Herb Levine now live in Sarasota and Maine. Watch for Frankel’s new mystery series featuring Israeli intelligence agent, Maya Rimon, with The Deadly Scrolls out in May 2022 and The Hyena Murders out in November 2022.
