Israeli Religious Perspectives on the Land: Cooperation and Conflict

What is Judaism really about? How can we understand Torah? In parashat B’reishit (Genesis 1), God creates all human beings to be equal. In parashat Lech L’cha (Genesis 12), God uniquely gives the Land of Israel to Abraham. And in parashat Vayera (Genesis 18), Abraham’s children are drawn into a conflict over who is going to inherit the land. Clearly, the Torah provides several different and conflicting models of how we are to relate to the Land.  How do we understand those religious perspectives in relation to the modern State of Israel? What insight can religious people shed on the conflicts that shape contemporary Israeli life?  Come hear from Dr. Debbie Weissman and Rabbi Haim Shalom as they talk about their individual journeys as religious people and Israelis who are deeply committed to particular views of Israel and its relations with its neighbors. You’ll have the chance to ask questions that dive into the complexity of how Dr. Weissman and Rabbi Shalom see themselves and their work and discuss the future of the Jewish world, Zionism, secularism, and religiosity.  Don’t miss it!
