Trans Halakha: Intergenerational Learning

In this opportunity for intergenerational learning, all are invited to join GJC’s teens to study halakha with Laynie Soloman, the co-founder of the Trans Halakha project. When it comes to questions of identity, dignity and self-determination, halakha does not give us “yes” or “no” answers. Instead, halakha, in its most powerful moments, becomes a language we can use to express our deepest truths. This class will explore halakha as a way to find language within our tradition to talk about the choices we make, and it will explore the ways we reshape and remake our tradition through aligning it with our lived experiences.
TUITION: $20/member, $30/non-member
Laynie Solomon
Laynie Soloman (they/them) is a teacher and Torah-lover who seeks to uplift the piously irreverent, queer, and subversive spirit of rabbinic text and theology. They serve as the Associate Rosh Yeshiva at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva, where they co-founded the Trans Halakha Project, and they received the Covenant Foundation’s 2020 Pomegranate Prize for emerging Jewish educators. Laynie is a third generation Ashkenazi Philadelphian, and when they’re not learning Talmud, you can find Laynie reading about liberation theology, laying in their hammock, and singing nigunim.
