On Yom Kippur, we read in the Haftarah the words of Isaiah: “This is the fast I desire: To unlock the fetters of wickedness, And untie the cords of the yoke, To let the oppressed go free; To break off every yoke.” In our Oscar Bregman Memorial Program this year, we will consider how this vision for ending oppression connects to the American movement for reparations for slavery. Rev. Naomi Washington-Leapheart will lead the program, in which she will define reparations within a wider framework of transformative justice, examine what has been breached and what can be repaired, and consider the possibilities for repair that we may encounter: interpersonal, institutional, material. We will ask, together, “How can I live a lifestyle of reparations?” Rev. Naomi will also guide us through an interactive scenario in which we take on the responsibility of envisioning how to make repair.
Please join us in person at 3:00 PM in GJC’s Charry Sanctuary for this program or watch it live-stream!
