Event Navigation

The holiday of Shavuot connects us to each other and to our ancestors as we commemorate and relive revelation of Torah. This year, we have the opportunity to gather together in person for GJC’s annual Tikkun Leyl Shavuot (traditionally an all-night Torah study). Keep reading below for all the details!
- 7:00-7:45 PM: Chapter 6 of Pirkei Avot with Rabbi Shai Gluskin
- 8:00-8:45 PM: Torah Study Session 1 Options
- Reading the Book of Ruth: Mothers and Daughters Traveling Together to Reestablish Life (with a look toward the war in Ukraine) with Rabbi Fredi Cooper
- Location: Maple Tent
- Description: TBA
- The Inner work of Justice: Middot as a practice for dismantling racism in our hearts and communities with Rabbi Tamara Cohen and Elaine Dushoff
- Location: Maslow Auditorium
- Description: Making any kind of change requires commitment and courage. The Israelites at Sinai agreed to “do and listen” – but doing and listening well is not easy. We all have the intention to interact with all people with respect and equity but in practice we often find ourselves coming up against learned unconscious biases. Through text study, storytelling and truth sharing, this session, which draws on a curriculum developed by The Inside Out Wisdom and Action Project will be an opportunity to draw on the practice of Mussar (applied Jewish ethics) to engage in the spiritual and practical work of healing racial bias. We hope to also weave in lessons from past moments of courage and change at GJC into our learning.
- Reading the Book of Ruth: Mothers and Daughters Traveling Together to Reestablish Life (with a look toward the war in Ukraine) with Rabbi Fredi Cooper
- 9:00-9:30 PM: Ma’ariv with Rabbi Zeff
- 9:45-10:30 PM: Torah Study Session 2 Options
- The Torah of Reproductive Justice with Lynne Jacobs
- Location: Maple Tent
- Description: This session will guide you through some of the texts that undergird Judaism’s nuanced approach to reproductive healthcare….in contrast to proposals to limit or block access to abortion that reflect a specific Christian definition of the beginning of life. We’ll review and discuss some traditional Jewish sources that illuminate one of the major struggles of our day.
- Welcoming the Stranger: Refugees in Jewish Law with Rabbi Hanoch Fields
- Location: Maslow Auditorium
- Description: TBA
- The Torah of Reproductive Justice with Lynne Jacobs
- 10:45-11:30 PM: Torah Study Session 3 Options
- Disability in American and Jewish Law: Defining Disability and Communal Obligations of Support with Rabbi Zeff and Maria Pulzetti
- Location: Maple Tent
- Description: We will look at some of the sources in both Jewish and American law that we studied in this year’s Lunch and Learn program. How do Jewish law’s ancient definitions of disability and approaches toward including people with disabilities in community compare to contemporary American legal approaches? What can we learn from comparing them?
- Ways of Knowing with Aviva Perlo
- Location: Maslow Auditorium
- Description: How do we know what is true and what is not — thru a Jewish lens and thru our own life stories? We’ll look at traditional Jewish texts as well as the arc and essence of stories.

- 11:45-12:00 AM: Torah at Night – Midnight Traditions with Rabbi Zeff and Maria Pulzetti
- Location: Maple Tent
- Description: The book of Joshua teaches: “Do not let this book of Torah leave your lips; meditate upon it day and night,” (Joshua 1:8), and the ancient rabbis taught that this obligates us to study Torah at night. As the clock reaches midnight, we will look at various traditions about nighttime Torah study and lift our voices in song together.
- 12:00-5:00 AM: Break
- 5:00-6:30 AM: Sunrise Shaharit with Rabbi Zeff and Maria Pulzetti
