Policing and Accountability

12/03/2020 @ 12/03/2020 - 12/03/2020 EST

Event Navigation

“Facing Systemic Racism” is planned as a series of zoom talks organized by the Tikkun Olam Coordinating Team, to help us better understand, recognize, and oppose systemic racism in our immediate and larger communities. Every session will have a guest speaker with expertise in their subject, as well as participation by attendees. Our hope is that members from all parts of the synagogue will join in respectful and sometimes difficult conversations about race and the institutions of our society. If you decide to attend, please register and you will receive a short article or podcast about the topic, along with the zoom link. For the registration link, please email Margaret Shapiro at mshapiro2@me.com.

In “Policing and Accountability,” Dana Bazelon, current Policy Advisor to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, will discuss the dilemmas, questions, and implications of achieving both police protection and effective accountability in Philadelphia.

Dana Bazelon is currently a Policy Advisor to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.  She drafts and implements policies to help realize the District Attorney’s agenda of criminal justice reform. This includes an array of initiatives including eliminating cash bail, reducing the number of individuals on supervision, the implementation of the Clean Slate Act, and law enforcement accountability.   She graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 2007 and went on to clerk for the Honorable Michael M. Baylson in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 2007 and 2008.  She spent three years working as a Philadelphia Public Defender before going into private practice, where she specialized in civil rights litigation and federal criminal defense.
