The announcement on August 13th of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates sent shockwaves through the political world of the Middle East. Join us over Zoom to hear these experts from Israel explain the varied contours of this significant change in Israel’s international relations and how it might affect Israel’s future.
About the Speakers:
Professor Yossi Shain earned his BA in Philosophy and MA in Political Science from Tel Aviv University (both with distinction), and in 1988 received his Ph.D. in Political Science (with distinction) from Yale University. He runs a dual academic career: At TAU (since 1989) he holds The Romulo Betancourt Chair in Political Science, serves as Head of the School of Political Science, Government and International Affairs, Director of the Frances Brody Institute for Applied Diplomacy, and Head of the Aba Eben Graduate Program of Diplomacy. At Georgetown Univ. (since 1999) he is Full Professor Emeritus of Comparative Government and Diaspora Politics and Founding Director of the Program for Jewish Civilization. In 2016 (until 2019) Shain was appointed by the Government of Israel to serve on Israel’s Council of Higher Education (VATAT) – a 7 member-committee that determines Israel’s Academy’s 12 Billion Shekel annual budget. Shain is now also the Chair of Israel’s National Committee for rejuvenating the humanities. Shain has served as advisor to Israel Foreign Minister and to the Chief of Staff of the IDF. He also consulted businesses, governmental agencies and NGO’s in Israel, the US and other countries, and worked with research groups attached to the United Nations. Shain served many committees related to Foreign Policy, Diaspora and migration policies, security and human rights, and The Jewish World. He lectures around the world. Shain’s scholarly awards include the American Political Science Association’s Helen Dwight Reed Award, (for best doctoral dissertation in International Politics); International Fulbright award and Israel’s Allon Fellowship for distinguished young scholars. He was honored as the David and Goldie Blacksteen Lecturer in Jewish Ethics at Yale Law School, and as Olin Lecturer at the Harvard Lecturer Academy. He also received fellowships from the Social Science Research Council and other American, Swiss, French and German foundations, and held (for 3 years) the Aaron and Cecile Goldman visiting Chair at Georgetown’s Department of Government.
Shain’s Books include The Frontier of Loyalty: Political Exiles in the Age of the Nation-State, Governments-in-Exile in Contemporary World Politics, Between States: Interim Governments and Democratic Transitions, Democracy: The Challenges Ahead, Marketing the American Creed Abroad: Diasporas in the U.S. and Their Homelands, Kinship and Diasporas in International Affairs, Collective Memory in International Affairs, The Israeli Century and the “Israelization of Judaism, and The Language of Corruption and Israel’s Moral Culture.
Dr. Joshua Krasna, a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Research Institute’s Program on the Middle East, is an analyst specializing in Middle East political and regional developments and forecasting, as well as in international strategic issues. He recently retired after 30 years of service in Israel to include postings as an Israeli diplomat in Jordan and Canada. His last assignment before retirement was as an Instructor at the Israel National Defense College. He has published numerous articles, and is proficient in Hebrew and Arabic. Dr. Krasna holds a PhD from Bar Ilan University and is a graduate of Columbia University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. He teaches at NYU’s Center for Global Affairs and at Tel Aviv University, and is a Fellow of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategic Studies.
