A community of communities

Saturday Morning Services

There is more than one way to be Jewish, and that means that there is far more than one way to celebrate the day of Shabbat in community.  At GJC, we revel in that diversity, believing that having a range of different choices for praying and learning on Shabbat morning, all taking place at the same time within one synagogue, enriches our community immensely.  All of our prayer and study groups are welcoming to all, fully egalitarian, and highly participatory.  We invite you to come and explore them.  Many of our members find that they like so many things about so many different groups that they can't choose just one, so they alternate.  Others find that their preferences or sensibilities change over time, leading them from one group to another.  Come find your path with us!

Charry Service

  • Led by Rabbi Zeff, this weekly service puts an emphasis on learning, with a shorter Shacharit prayer service and a longer period for study, led by the Rabbi and by members.
  • The service meets in the Charry Sanctuary during the year, place where most of our Bar and Bat Mitzvah services and celebrations take place, and in Magil Chapel in the summer.  Members young and old often take roles reading Torah & Haftarah in the service.

Dorshei Derekh

  • This weekly member-led Reconstructionist minyan puts an emphasis on singing, with a full P'sukei d'Zimra (preliminary service), and interactive discussion during the d'var Torah.
  • The minyan meets in the Maslow Auditorium, and all roles in the service are coordinated and filled by members, who also organize social activities, study, and celebrations throughout the year.

Minyan Masorti

  • This weekly member-led traditional egalitarian minyan puts an emphasis on a complete traditional prayer service, with repetition of the Amidah in Shacharit and a full Torah reading.
  • The minyan meets in the Temin Canteen Room, and all roles in the service are coordinated and filled by members, who also organize social activities, study, and celebrations throughout the year.

Kol D'mamah

  • This monthly one-hour service focuses on chanting, meditation, and movement, with different leaders giving the service a different emphasis each month.
  • The service meets in the Library, where it also meets on Tuesday mornings and, once a month, on Tuesday evenings for meditation together.

Children's Services

  • Services for our youngest members 0-5 include Ginat Shabbat, Musical Marching Minyan, and ShabbaBaby, and meet in our pre-school rooms on the second floor of the school building.
  • Junior Congregation serves 6-11 year-olds with a service that emphasizes acquiring synagogue skills.
